Liposuction for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Most of us experience stressful moments when our faces flush and we begin perspiring under our arms. That’s a normal, healthy reaction. But some people sweat frequently and excessively, which can cause embarrassment in both work and social situations. We can treat this condition, called hyperhidrosis, at our Ann Arbor practice with an innovative liposuction technique.
What Is SAFELipo®?
Plastic surgeons typically use liposuction to remove excess fat. SAFELipo is a particular technique used for fat reduction that can also be used to safely and permanently reduce the function of overactive underarm sweat glands. The plastic surgeon who developed SAFELipo, Dr. Simeon Wall Jr., noticed a that patients experienced a dramatic reduction in both sweat and odor as a side benefit of having body contouring procedures near the underarm and breasts. Surgeons now use SAFELipo specifically to treat hyperhidrosis.
How It Works
The 3-step SAFELipo process is gentler and more effective than using heat-based liposuction techniques to treat excessive underarm sweating. SAFELipo deactivates and physically disrupts the glands that produce underarm sweat and odor. Unlike other forms of liposuction used to treat excessive sweating, SAFELipo doesn’t use heat energy. That means it won’t damage adjacent, vital tissue and leads to a smoother recovery without forming scar tissue.
SAFELipo reduces excessive sweating indefinitely. The physical disruption of some sweat glands and deactivation of others minimizes both underarm sweat and the odor associated with sweating. Its long-lasting results is one of the advantages it has compared to BOTOX® injections, which provide temporary relief from excessive underarm sweating.
