PRP Therapy With Microneedling

Aging, sun damage, and many other factors can significantly affect our skin. Over time most people notice symptoms such as diminished tone and texture changing their complexions. While many drugstore products promise to brighten and improve skin, more significant treatment options are sometimes appropriate. At The Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we combine 2 of the most promising techniques into a single skin care procedure for our Ann Arbor, Michigan-area patients.

What are PRP Therapy and Microneedling?

In our Ann Arbor practice, PRP therapy and microneedling are 2 distinct techniques that complement one another and work in harmony to create brighter and more even-toned skin.

PRP therapy, short for “platelet-rich plasma” therapy, uses the patient’s own blood platelets to improve the appearance and structure of the skin. PRP therapy has long been used in other medical specialties, such as orthopedics, to help certain injuries heal faster. When applied to or injected into the skin, PRP therapy can improve skin’s overall integrity, fading the look of wrinkles, scars, and darker pigmentation.

Microneedling is a pen-like device that houses very fine, sterile needles. With one of the most advanced pens on the market, when passed over the skin, the device creates a series of small punctures, or “micro injuries,” which effectively triggers your body’s natural healing response to injury.

This process promotes an increased production of collagen and elastin in the treated area, which gradually increases the firmness of your skin, reduces blemishes, improves signs of aging and sun damage, and minimizes the appearance of scars.

When used together, these 2 techniques can create beautiful results.

At The Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we use Bellus Medical products for our microneedling and PRP services. As manufacturer of the SkinPen®, the popular microneedling device, Bellus Medical is our trusted supplier for skin regeneration.

SkinPen was one of the original devices first intended for microneedling, and it was the first device of its kind to be cleared by the FDA. Microneedling with SkinPen is notably more comfortable and safer than it is with some other methods, because the SkinPen cartridges are completely sterile. The incredibly fine, thin needles enter the skin at a 90-degree angle for precise perforations and minimal tissue damage. Finally, the depth of your SkinPen treatment can be adjusted based on your specific needs. This allows for a treatment with unmatched precision.

We also offer several other options for skin tightening and improvement, such as FaceTite, a radiofrequency treatment that stimulates collagen development.

Are You a Candidate for PRP Therapy With Microneedling?

PRP therapy with microneedling is a safe option for virtually every skin type and color, unlike other more invasive skin treatments. It can be performed almost anywhere on the body.Because the treatment uses your own blood platelets, there’s little risk of an adverse reaction. You may benefit from this technique if you’re bothered by any of the following concerns:

  • Signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage, including discoloration
  • Scarring from acne, chickenpox, or surgery
  • Large pore size
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Stretch marks

During your consultation, you and your provider will discuss your skincare options. You may determine that you’re a better match for another treatment, such as IPL or injectable dermal fillers.

The Treatment Experience

We perform your treatment as an outpatient procedure here in our office. We first draw a small amount of blood from your arm just as you’d experience in a medical laboratory. We then process that blood in a special device to isolate the platelets from the other blood components.

In the meantime, we apply a light topical anesthesia to further enhance your comfort. Once we isolate your platelet rich plasma, one of our skincare practitioners will administer the microneedling procedure… The microneedling tool uses a very short, fine needle to a series of small punctures, or “micro injuries,”. These perforations serve as “channels” in your skin that allows your isolated platelets to travel deeper into the skin enhancing results.

After your treatment, your skin may appear red or inflamed and you may notice a pin point bleed. These symptoms go away on their own within a day or so, but it’s important to follow our aftercare instructions closely and stay out of the sun.

Within the next week, you’ll likely notice your complexion becoming brighter and more even. Your fine lines will begin to fade, and the overall quality of your skin will improve. You can expect your results to last for several months.

We can’t wait to help you look your best, whether it’s with PRP therapy or another procedure. Please request your consultation online or call the Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at (734) 712-2323.
